CANOPY AT CITRUS PLAZA (PHASE ONE CONSTRUCTION UNDERWAY)
Indio, CA
HDG created the landscape design for phases one and two of Canopy, a mixed-use commercial and multi-family residential project. Phase one, an expansion of the existing Citrus Plaza on Jefferson Street, is now under construction and will feature a variety of dining and retail opportunities in addition to a Ralph’s fuel station.
The landscape design of the plaza expansion incorporates a unique water sculpture that enlivens the heart of the plaza and complements the overall modern architectural style. Designed by artist and founder of MODFOUNTAIN, Randy Bolander, this remarkable water sculpture delivers a dramatic, yet minimalistic focal point to distinguish the central gathering space from the perimeter of the plaza.
The sculpture was constructed using slow-rusting stainless steel, ensuring durability without sacrificing the design. As you can see in the demonstration video, the finished sculpture evolved from the initial 3-D rendering; minor structural and material changes were made so that the sculpture would function as intended upon installation. The slight adjustment made to the height and shape allows water to flow seamlessly, and the steel’s silver patina was chosen to fit the plaza’s color palette.
Furthermore, the landscape design uses hardscape elements to promote walkability and ease of access to various restaurants and shops, providing visitors with a sense of synergy throughout the plaza. The planting design employs date palms to offer shade during the day, while strategically placed light fixtures create a pleasant ambiance in the evening.
